We begin at Manchester’s original marketplace, home to the Shambles and the very first Exchange, where trade shaped the city’s earliest identity. From these narrow streets, commerce expanded towards the monumental Royal Exchange, a building that came to symbolise Manchester’s global reach. Yet this heart of trade has also been tested, by shifting industries, by the devastation of wartime bombing, and by the changing ways people use and value the city centre.
Walking from market stalls to marble halls, we trace how trade, resilience, and reinvention have continually reshaped Manchester’s core.
